Robin's tl was originally just an excuse to make an independent Maryland, but ended up developing into a full timeline. As its development continues it continually gets weirder and more implausible, while still clinging to a thin veil of realism.
Maryland[edit | edit source]
Robin's tl all started out as an excuse to make a Maryland wank, so that's the part of it that has the most thought put into it. Early on, Maryland stays a colony primarily for British Catholics. A few centuries later, there's an international Catholic communist movement (complete with its own antipope in Quebec), and Marylanders, somewhat culturally isolated and pissed off at being pushed around by their more powerful and coincidentally Protestant neighbors, revolt and join the newly founded Christian Communist League. The CCL ends up entering essentially a smaller scale cold war with the Commonwealth of the Middle Atlantic, but it de-escalates with no major conflict by the early 2000s. In 2013, Maryland's entry into the CMA finally signified definitively the end of hostile relations in North America.
The Dutch Republic[edit | edit source]
Another silly idea spun off into a full part of the timeline, The Dutch Republic, while retaining its colonies in the new world, lost the Netherlands and now remains as a government in exile in the Americas. Considering the original seven provinces "under long-term occupation", the Dutch Republic in practice consists of the three provinces of New Netherland, Guyana, and Antilles. Their refusal to let go of their legal claims in Europe results in a convoluted governmental structure of proxy officers and excessively nested systems of subnational divisions. The Dutch Republic is known for being very socially progressive but economically right-wing.
Virginia[edit | edit source]
The Republic of Virginia is the foremost power in eastern North America, and the de facto leader of the Commonwealth of the Middle Atlantic. Virginia separated from the United Kingdom in the early 19th century after the UK banned slavery in its colonies, forming the first iteration of the CMA along with Maryland, Carolina, and a few other ex-colonies. However, when Virginia annexed Carolina that fell apart pretty quickly, although it left Virginia in a powerful position. Although its growth in power stopped as its slave economy became unviable in the late 19th century, it was back on its feet by the early-mid 20th century, and slightly less awful in terms of civil rights as well. By 2018, it, along with Illinois and the Dutch Republic, managed to strongarm most of the Christian Communist League into open international trade.
Thanks to settlement of Huguenots in Carolina succeeding on a much larger scale, Virginia is home to an Occitan-English creole, spoken mainly in the Appalachians and western lowlands.
Robin is currently working on a map of Virginia.
